Continental Building - Historic Downtown/Old Bank District PDF Print E-mail

Continental BuildingImageLocated at Fourth and Main Streets, the Continental Building was originally called the Braly Block when it was completed in 1904, named for John Hyde Braly. He was one of California's early pioneers arriving in Northern California with his family a few months before the Gold Rush of 1849. The Continental Building is Los Angeles' first fully representative Beaux Arts architectural product. At 175 feet in height, it is considered the city's first 'skyscraper' and remained the tallest building in the city for more than 50 years.  The twelve-story building carries a wealth of rich and heavy ornament, most of which is modeled in architectural terra cotta - pediments, garlands, lion's heads, columns, and elaborate brackets, just to point out a few of the elements.  The first floor  has been restored to its original beauty using old photos as reference.  Nowadays, the grand entry way is just the beginning to the Continental Building's 56 units.

The ceiling heights in these units are up to 22 feet, and all 12th floor units have walk-up loft areas. The kitchens boast granite countertops with a gas stove and range, garbage disposal and dishwasher.  Finally, the bathroom houses a porcelain bathtub with slate tile enclosures.
